Reading & Writing & 'Rithmatic...

Alex and Emma are off to school today. Emma was a little apprehensive after we got to her room, but I'm sure she recovered quickly. Alex was feeling "excited and sad" which sounds like a pretty good description for the first day of school. He really enjoyed his summer, but is looking forward to seeing his friends again. Benjamin trotted along for the drop-offs, smiling the whole time. We'll see how he does with the quieter house.

Yesterday, I let the kids pick an activity for their last day of summer, so we went mini-golfing. Alex insisted on going to the golfing place that has go-karts. Benjamin really wanted to take a ride in the go-karts as well, so he had a hard time accepting that he wasn't big enough. We also went to a pizza/game place for lunch. Alex racked up the points and high scores playing skee-ball. He ended up with over 2000 tickets (thank goodness it is all electronic on a card), so he got a new lava lamp. I was never good enough at the games, so I always ended up with some bouncy balls and a piece of gum. Emma did pretty well herself and managed to score some nice prizes as well.

Look out Michael Phelps...here comes Alex Buckley. Last night was Alex's first swim practice for the new year-round swim team he wants to join. He jumped in and swam for an hour. He was pretty wiped afterwards, but seemed pleased to be back in the pool. He was the smallest boy in the group which included 9 to 12 year olds. I always look at groups like that and have a hard time imagining him being that big in a couple more years.

Sean's trip to Albuquerque went well. Both of his flights were right on time which makes travelling a little easier. Sean, his step-brother, Jerry, and his niece, Amber, spent some time hiking on Sunday. They went to the Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, otherwise referred to as Tent Rocks. The area was designated as a national monument in 2001 and is still a little off the beaten path. Sean said it was absolutely amazing and he can't wait to go back with the kids, although Benjamin would probably need to go in a carrier backpack at this point. Sean found a website with some amazing pictures from the area, if you're interested. http://kevingong.com/Hiking/TentRocks.html I've included two of the pictures here...

Tent Rocks looks kind of like the Badlands with harder rock.

How is Benjamin doing being on his own during the day? I hope the kids are having a great first week. Their last day of summer sounded like lots of fun. A lava lamp, eh? Remember the one Grandma Powers used to have? I thought it was sooo cool.

Tent Rocks looks pretty amazing!

Wow, the Tent Rocks look awesome! I told Joe recently that I would be interested in going to New Mexico some day so perhaps the Tent Rocks will motivate him more now.

Alex mentioned to us while visting he really wanted to join the Year Round swim team. I hope that doesn't mean you have to be at the pool by 6 AM all year round, yikes!

Hmm, I wonder why Alex insisted on a mini golf course with go karts?! What fun! Lava lamps are cool even if mine is currently jammed into the back of a closet. Love, Aunt Dude
