Hi Family and Friends,
Here we are on day 5 at the hospital. We're all a little sick of hospital food by now, but we're managing.
Benjamin has had quite a day. They removed an abdominal drain, his foley catheter, and the epidural catheter. They have also taken off his blood pressure cuff and only put it on when they need to take his pressure. He should be feeling a little less tethered, although he still has another catheter, his IV (in his right arm, ugh), and leads for the monitors.
He has continued to run a low grade fever today, although it was easily brought down with Tylenol. Yesterday, they sent out a sample for a urine culture and it did come back positive for bacteria. Dr. Cortez said it is very common after a procedure like this. They are changing his antibiotics to get rid of those bugs.
Other than that, he watched one of his Baby Einstein movies today and loved it. He was smiling and pointing at the screen. He has been anti-nap all day today. Hopefully, that bodes well for tonight since he'll be tired. He also had a sponge bath. At the beginning, he thought it was great and splashed the assistant and me with some bubbles. The end was a little cold, though. Last but not least, he had an interesting reaction to his pulse ox monitor on his toe this afternoon. He pulled his sock off and saw that his toe was glowing bright red from the monitor. He did not like that at all and started crying hard. We hastily put on his sock and calmed him down. I'm not sure what set him off, but he doesn't like his toe looking like ET's finger!
Still not sure when he'll be getting out. When we asked Dr. Cortez yesterday, he said probably 2-3 days so maybe Saturday or Sunday. Sean thinks we should add a day to that so maybe Monday. Who knows. We just want to make sure he is recovering nicely and has the care he needs.
Take care,
Julie

Thanks for the update. Glad Benjamin is getting some of the tubes and cords removed, so he doesn't feel as restrained. Hopefully his fever will go away. I am sure you are getting stir crazy in the hospital and want to be home. Hopefully things will go well the next few days, so you can take Benjamin home. Take care.
Spencer hated the oxymeter, too. He would freak out and try to pull it off his toes. I think glowy red is not a color little kids love. Reading all your entries has taken me back to our days in CHOA. Spencer was 2, too, although Benjamin seems so little that it's hard to believe Spence was really that small. We are praying for Benjamin and hope all continues to go well. I'm think I've told you before that Mike calls the hospital the Hotel California, 'cause you can check in any time you like, but you can never leave. Good luck with getting out. Our thoughts are with you.
Hey Julie, Glad to hear things are progressing in the right direction. I am sorry I have not called or visited this week. I feel like a bad friend! Work has been crazy. I would really like to come by for a short visit tomorrow if that is okay. Nobody has been sick so I should not bring any germs. I'll call your cell phone later tonight. Long hospital stays get old quick. You will be very glad to be at home with him in a few days.
Yea for fewer tubes! That's great news. We keep thinking of /praying for you guys. Much Love from Las Vegas.
Thanks so much for sharing Benjamin's progress through the blog. I am so glad that he continues to improve and came through the surgery so well. It sounds like everything is going well with the grandparents at home also. I talk to Alex each day about things. You and Benjamin will continue to be in my prayers.
