Alex should have a great month of March! Right now, he is at science camp in the mountains near Lake Arrowhead/Big Bear. There is lots of snow on the ground so he was pretty excited to see that. We are anxiously waiting to hear about all of his activities since there is no contact with the kids during the week. Some of the sessions include archery, a night hike, dissecting a squid and a ropes course. Sean and I think the parents should get to have a week over there sometime, too.
Next weekend, he is taking a piano theory test. This endeavor has turned out to be much more involved than we thought. He is playing 3 songs, 2 of which must be memorized. (See his YouTube video (click video) for one of the songs). He also has to play 3 scales including major, minor, harmonic minor versions. Then he takes a written theory test, does ear training and sight reading. Wow. Nothing like he's done before, so it's quite a challenge.
The next day he is going to Irvine to play in the State Chess Championship. Imagine a whole day playing 5 rounds of chess. Better him than me, although he'll be in heaven.
The weekend after that, he'll participate in the math field day which is a day long math competition.
After telling his great grandpa about all of these happenings, grandpa asked, "When does he go to school?" That's a good question, but that will fit in as well.
Needless to say, Alex is making the most of his 6th grade year. He has made some great new friends and is learning a lot.

Wow, Alex is a BUSY 6th grader! Just wait until he's a big time high school kid then he'll be even more busy!
Camping up in the mountains sounds interesting...I don't know if it would be fun with all that snow on the ground. I'm sure it is great fun for a 6th grade boy, though!
Love, Aunt Dude
Can't believe how busy Alex is these days... glad he is enjoying his new school and has made new friends.. Good luck Alex.
